Who called me from a 1800 number?
1800 numbers are freecall numbers: free from Australian landlines, and usually free from mobiles. Real banks, government agencies and airlines use them, which is exactly why scammers imitate them. Verify by hanging up and dialling the number printed on your card or on the official website.

Before you call a 1800 number back
- Caller ID is supplied by the calling network, not verified by your phone — a familiar-looking number is not proof of who is on the line.
- One ring with no voicemail is rarely worth returning. Read our guide on missed calls first.
- If the caller wants money, a code or remote access, hang up and dial the organisation on a number you found yourself. See bank impersonation calls.
